Place des Vosges, inaugurated in 1612 as the Place Royale, is the oldest planned square in Paris. Its 36 matching red-brick houses surround a garden in the heart of the Marais.

The Musée national Picasso-Paris, in the Hôtel Salé in the Marais, holds more than 5,000 works by Pablo Picasso, the largest public collection of his art.
