The Hôtel de Ville has housed the city's local administration since 1357. The current neo-Renaissance building was rebuilt after the original was burned during the Paris Commune in 1871.

The Conciergerie is a former royal palace and prison on the Île de la Cité. During the Revolution it held prisoners before their execution, including Queen Marie Antoinette.
